Most sane “Reno-ites” and “Sparkans” would never think of paying homage to our archenemy WINTER, but Judy and Russ were trying to do just that when they invited a bunch of insane people to their “Winter Appetizer Party.”

Before I go on, let me make a stern declaration: WINTER party is right - it’s bitter cold outside and Nevadaland is a world of whiteness, with ice falling from the sky. That spring-like fling that graced the area in Jan/Feb is gone, blown away by a cold front that will keep us chilled and huddled by the gas logs, eating chicken soup. Crazy weather!
The forecast: Hi 24 – Lo 10 (that’s Fahrenheit not Celsius, folks). Yippee-yeah! Hell, snow had even dusted the rooftops of San Francisco’s Twin Peaks; first time in 35 years. Al Gore where are you when we need you? Oh yeah, I remember you are snowed in like the rest of us.

Because I’m such a wimp driving in these conditions my tummy got all convulsive when we hit the road to the North Pole at 6:00 PM. It wasn’t as bad as I had expected, but it was no tiptoe through a bed of roses either. Luckily we didn’t slip or slide, mainly because we drove slower than molasses.
The party was in full swing when we arrived. Young and old, but mostly people in the mid-life-crisis range, came out of hibernation ready to have a good time. The appetizers guests brought came in all shapes and sizes and every imaginable ethnic origin. There were Dips, Spreads, Wraps, Wedges, Rolls, Eggs, Salsa, Chips, and Puffs. Clusters, Spirals, Twists, Triangles, Skewers and cold, hot and savory thingies! But there was only one dish of MEATBALLS! The reason? Judy and/or Russ HATE them.
I am too exhausted to describe the details of the entire evening, but I can’t go to sleep without saying THANK YOU to J & R who sweated and toiled to make the party very special. Everything was elegant and comfortable and the wine was flowing all night long. But when it’s all said and done, it’s not about the wine or food. It’s about the friendship and camaraderie. The food is gone in a few hours, but the memories will live on forever.
A big thanks to J & R for the great shindig, but damn we should have had more meatballs.

.....I must continue this tomorrow as my eyelids are getting heavier by the moment.
For all winter’s fury…………… when I woke up I was surprised……..the sun was shining brightly and there is a light, at the end of the cloudy tunnel. Seasons change! Oh, it won’t be long, y’know. We gotta have some rough days and some good days, but it won’t be long before spring.
